The 2003 FSDA Southern Open State Championship was a spectacular success. 150 participants and several hundred spectators enjoyed several days of diving activities. The tournament received coverage in Florida Scuba News and Spearfishing Magazine. We added 50 new members to the FSDA, and are now reaching for the 400 mark. Fourteen Beautiful State Champion trophies, designed by Dean Young, were awarded to the winners of each category.

The results were spread across a broad spectrum of participants. Trophies were awarded to freedivers, photographers, scuba divers, females, and youths. A lifetime achievement award was presented to Ray Odor for 40 years of participation. Every entrant won at least one great prize, and many expressed their gratitude to the sponsors. Many of the participants are now proudly wearing the Tournament T-shirt. Results, pictures, and reports are also located on Spearboard at Spearboard SOD State Championship Threads.

We want to thank all of the FSDA volunteers, Ballyhoo Grille, and all of our great sponsors for helping with the tournament. Next year’s tournament will be held June 25, 26, and 27, again at Ballyhoo in Tarpon. We are going to limit entries top the first 165 persons, so plan on entering early! See you then!
