The 2009-2010 Theme was: "GLOBAL WARMING:
HELP KEEP OUR OCEANS COOL"
Using this important and current theme, our
students studied these issues as they designed their poster. You will
see they used a variety of approaches to teach the public to keep our
oceans cool – from pictures of melting polar ice, to "Reduce, Recycle,
Reuse", to an earth on fire! One teacher wrote to us that they had some:
"Awesome Discussions on the Global Warming theme." This is how your FSDA
reaches out to students – our future depends on them. Pause your busy
world and view all their posters – Florida students are COOL!
They urge you to be part of the SOLUTION!
1) Save Electricity: Turn off the lights, TV,
and computers when not in use. Unplug chargers between uses.
2) Heating and Cooling: Set the air
conditioning temperature a few degrees higher and wear light, loose
clothing. Set the heater a few degrees lower and wear layers and
sweaters.
3) Traveling: Use public transportation where
it is available. Combine several errands into one trip. Carpool with
friends to reduce the number of cars on the road. Walk or ride your bike
if possible.
4) Recycle: Recycle paper, glass, plastic and
cans. Use paper bags or reusable bags at the grocery store.
As in past years, the 1st, 2nd
and 3rd place Florida winners in each age group (K-2, 3-5,
6-8 and 9-12) competed with the winners of New York/New Jersey –
California and all states in-between. Twenty one different Florida city
schools participated this year and we had 5 National winners.
We are proud that our National 1st
place winner, Cristina Santos, 12 grader from Ocala, was selected for
the Grand Prize of a trip to the Cayman Islands – 8 days/7 night’s
vacation courtesy of Villas of the Galleon, a luxury condominium
located on Grand Cayman’s famous 7 mile beach. The resort stay is for up
to two (2) adults and two (2) children. Also included was (2) round
trip, non-stop tickets from Miami, FL to Grand Cayman for two (2)
adults, courtesy of Cayman Airways, the national flag carrier of
the Cayman Islands. The teacher of each 1st place National
winner won a prize also.
Yes, FSDA plays an important part in our
outreach to Florida’s students. Decisions are being made about the theme
for 2010-2011 and it may be on Whales. It usually comes out in the fall
and as I learn more, I will post the information for you. If you do not
have a student interested in art we ask you to pass it on to their
school.
Beneath The Sea, with their 35th
Year Show coming March 25, 26, & 27th 2010, is the parent
organization of Ocean Pals. This is not only the largest dive and travel
show in the nation, they are known for their good works. This show will
be fantastic – plan on being there!
