OCEAN PALS POSTER CONTEST 2007
Florida students have placed extremely well in the Regional and the
National poster contest. The students were awarded 3 - 1st places, 3 - 2nd
places, 4 - 3rd places and 2 Honorable Mentions (12 out of 16).
This year's theme was "Overfishing,
By-Catching, Bottom Trawling - Our Marine Life In Danger".
The students were to study the effects of human appetites for fish
exceeding the oceans' ecological limits with devastation impacts on marine
ecosystem. Overfishing one species breaks the natural order and places
other dependent species at risk. This creates a chain of damage that may
eventually affect the biodiversity of the whole ocean. The world's oceans
are struggling to survive their greatest threat - overfishing. Thankfully,
it is not too late to turn the tide. Urgent action is needed to change
fishing practices and reclaim our oceans for marine life and coastal
communities.
