OCEAN
EXPO
2006
FT. LAUDERDALE, FL
Pack 'em in, load 'em up - you know the drill. Everything but the
kitchen sink is stuffed into the trusty Jeep, including the theme sign
"SEA OF TOMORROW", and off we go. The Lauderdale show was held April 21,
22, & 23rd this year. The weather turned out good though and
the crowds responded well. It was their 10th Anniversary and
they pulled out the stops - prizes - prizes - prizes. I hope you didn't
miss all the fun!
Back in booth 344 was your fabulous duo - Sonia & Ken Smith (we were
moved and it turned out a better spot.) We were able to tie off the
display backboards securely (remember the year it blew down twice, Ed
Z?) The kids seem to really like having a booth with an activity for
them so they respond well to drawing on the mural paper across our
table. Even Ocean Fest's official artist (5th year) David
Dunleavy stopped by to draw a whale's tail. He let one of the cute
little girls color it in. They were impressed! Pascal Lecocq also
applied his artistry to the mural. Ocean Pals really appreciate their
interest in kids! This also draws the parents to receive the FSDA
information!
We used the colorful logo of Ocean Pals on a "Post It" to stick on
passers-by. It stayed "stuck" for quite a while and we had comments that
they were noticed throughout the show area. I updated the coloring page
with information about the theme of the contest: overfishing, global
warming, habitat conservation, etc. and where to go on the Internet to
find out more. This is our effort to pass on education.
We received a very nice letter from one teacher who honored the
winning OP students at her school during their Art Show. The pictures
she sent were great.
So, what is the 2007 Ocean Pals Poster Contest Theme? I thought you'd
never ask: "COASTLINES ARE OUR LIFELINESS." Coastlines provide a major
food source for much of the marine life throughout the world. Let's hope
we don't have the devastation of new hurricanes for them to use in their
poster message.
Winning awards is great but all the students, their peers, teachers
and their parents are winners too. As we say: "Students teach adults!"

THE FUTURE IS IN OUR STUDENTS!
OCEAN PALS 2006
"SEA OF TOMORROW"
POSTER CONTEST RESULTS
The Florida Regional Ocean Pal’s Poster
Contest Winners won 6 places in the 2006 National Contest held in New York
by Beneath The Sea, the parent organization. By sponsoring Ocean
Pals, FSDA is reaching out to students. Below are the
national and regional winners. The students are divided into four
age groups so the younger students do not compete against the older
students: Kindergarten – 2, 3rd – 5th
grade, 6th – 8th grade and 9th – 12th
grade.
We had one 1st place winner in the
6-8th grade division, Vincent Costers from Gulf Breeze and he was also
picked for the Grand Prize of a trip to the Cayman Islands! This is an
8 day/ 7 night vacation for 2 adults and 2 children courtesy of Villas
of the Galleon, a luxury condominium located on Grand Cayman's famous 7
mile beach. This prize also includes air fair for 2 adults courtesy of
Cayman Airways, the national flag carrier of the Cayman Islands round
trip, non-stop tickets from Miami, FL to Grand Cayman. Although we did
not have a large number of entries this year, (none from any 9-12 grade
students), our talented Florida students did very well in the national
contest competing against students from New York, Main, North Carolina,
California and all states in-between!

Since 1991 FSDA-WCC has reached out to Florida’s students. We accepted the
invitation to join Beneath The Sea's Ocean Pals™ National Poster Contest and have directed
and helped sponsor the Southeastern Region’s contest.
This contest is a national environmental
education-through-art program. Awareness is urgent! The students are
encouraged to expand their knowledge by researching the environment concern
for the marine environment with a different yearly theme and to express this
in their poster art. The winners of each of the different regions are then
entered in the national contest. Their messages are then brought to the widest
possible audience to create a stronger commitment to protect the environment
on which all life on this planet depends.
