OCEAN EXPO 2005
FT. LAUDERDALE, FL
Sonia and Ken Smith, FSDA’s representatives, arrived in Ft.
Lauderdale Beach Friday afternoon 4/15/05. (This was a month earlier
than last year.) The car was loaded up with the posters, display boards,
fans, ladder, tools, computer program, step stool and all the supplies
but the kitchen sink. Lift that panel, pound it in, where’s the staple
gun?, is this straight?, artfully arranging posters, a little more to
the left - higher, more stapling, the sponsor posters go here, is the
FSDA table cover centered?, someone turn on the fans PLEASE, WHEW, we
got the display up! Ed Grubicy, photographer, represented BTS (Beneath
The Sea – Ocean Pals’ parent organization) and also took turns to help
man the booth. Special thanks go to Neal Watson Productions for donating
the booth!
The popular show-mural was a main attraction again this year. We
invited show-going students to have fun adding their special, talented
marine life drawings to the mural paper lying across the table. Special
Show Certificates of Participation were presented to each of them. New
this year was a handout for the students to take home with educational
information about this year’s theme. There were pictures to color of
different marine animals that were illustrating the "Hard Shells and
Soft Bodies."
We also had two of the artists who were at the show stop by and add
their pictures to the mural – Guy Harvey, marine artist and underwater
photographer and Dr. Patrick Chevailler, artist. (Guy Harvey was
photographing the sharks at Walker’s Cay at the same time as the Rowdies
who were there.) I have T-shirts with illustrations from both artists.
The show continues to hold it’s own in battling the Weather Gods.
This year it there was a little rain but on the whole the weather was
much better. Thankfully, we were spared the heavy rain of past years.
Being flexible though, Neal always has some alternate programs to save
the day and keep show-goers busy and entertained. Join us next year to
see Florida’s biggest dive show – mark mid April on your calendar!

 A
Teachers Message |
|
|
Since 1991 FSDA-WCC has reached out to Florida’s students. We accepted the
invitation to join Beneath The Sea's Ocean Pals™ National Poster Contest and have directed
and helped sponsor the Southeastern Region’s contest.
This contest is a national environmental
education-through-art program. Awareness is urgent! The students are
encouraged to expand their knowledge by researching the environment concern
for the marine environment with a different yearly theme and to express this
in their poster art. The winners of each of the different regions are then
entered in the national contest. Their messages are then brought to the widest
possible audience to create a stronger commitment to protect the environment
on which all life on this planet depends. Click here to visit the
