ROWDIES

The Rowdies want to wish all scuba divers a great diving New Year! WOW, so many places to dive and so many diving friends to do it with!
There is nothing better than old friends, great food, and “horses douvers”  to enjoy with the lovely holiday decorations and great atmosphere at the Rowdies annual awards banquet December 2nd. Thanks Bobbie Jo Roe for organizing this event. Giving out awards was indeed the order of the night. The Rowdies honored Ed Zuranski with the “Bunnie Lauser Traveling Trophy” for the many years of service he has given to our diving club. Ed’s name (again) joins the many names etched on that trophy of past members who have given service to our club – Thank You Ed! He is our vice president, helps organize club trips, is our web-master and supports all we do as a club – year after year!
Pat Fredette, the 2005 winner of the “Len Favel Traveling Trophy”, presented this award to the 2006 winner, Sonia Smith, who earned the highest points in this years’ Club Competition. My points were for various photography categories, Fossils and Save Our Seas. This award is in honor of Len Favel, a past member who always entered every contest, went on every trip and supported all the Rowdies’ activities.
Lori Smith was awarded with the 2nd highest number of competition points. Lori was surprised with an enlargement of her winning “Best of Show” photograph. She had a beautiful “picture post card” scene of a bridge and a red sail boat on the water. Awards were also given to Ed Zuranski with the 3rd highest number of points and Bobbie Jo Roe with the 4th highest. Colorful certificates with new designs were presented to all winners, thanks to Pat Fredette and her daughter. Ruth & Steve Kisco and Joe & Lacey Pisani accepted the challenge of judging our photography contest (no small feat) – thanks guys! Mark Rentz, fossil expert, was called upon for his knowledgeable assistance with judging the fossil entries. We appreciate all that Mark does to help club members identify their finds while on his guided fossil hunts but this year he helped (re)identify using the pictures we sent of the bones selected for entries – a harder job! Thanks Mark! Lori’s tapir tooth was chosen for first place.
The Rowdies played “Santa” to CASA residents again this year – thanks everyone and thanks to Lori Smith for being “Rudolph” as she delivered the gifts!
By the way, we wish to CONGRATULATE the new Mr. & Mrs. – Ed & Mary Zuranski who tied the knot on October 21, 2006. Welcome to our group, Mary! Mary, are you going to be Ed’s underwater model?
2007 will bring new adventures to the Rowdies as we make plans for the New Year. (I’d like to go on the Nekton Pilot as Ed did this past year.) Diving was suspended for awhile in 2006 with broken bones for a couple of us, but we hope everyone will be back in the diving scene soon. The new competition started October 1st for 2007, so get ready for every category, guys! Bobbie Jo has a new camera with a waterproof bag for use around water but not for diving. I dropped my underwater camera so I’m not sure what I will be using. We invite new members to join us, bringing challenging new ideas – teach us old (sea) dogs new tricks! Lynn Willis has some good ideas of where to go and what to do also!! You are invited to join us at our 1st and 3rd Tuesday meetings. Call President Sonia at 522-8276 for information.

Let’s get wet,
Sonia

“OCEAN PALS” UPDATE:
Packages after packages have been arriving by our front door – sent by the kids hoping and praying to win the “Ocean Pals” Poster Contest. Ken and I will be opening the packages in the next few days, we have just opened one so far and it is REALLY good. This is the exciting part of running the poster contest for Florida schools. These students are really talented and I love seeing what they have created. Of course with all events there is also a drudgery part and that is to enter every student, school name and information in the computer data base. Ken has been my right hand with this through the years. We will be keeping you informed of the results on the Florida students.

Sonia Smith, Florida Director of “Ocean Pals” Poster Contest, a “Beneath The Sea” outreach to students.

The St.Pete Underwater Club Superbowl Party
The SPUCS are proud once again to put on its annual Superbowl party that will be on February 4th 2007 at the Minnreg Building. The doors will open at 4pm and the game starts at 6pm. Its fun for the whole family and door prizes for the kids. It’s a mere $10 to get in and kids 18 and under get in free.

We will also be having the dive gear swap meet again this year. So if you got something around you want to get rid of bring and swap it or sell it.

The food on hand will be great once again with the usual fried fish, ribs, hot dogs, burgers, shrimp, plus all the normal sides. Beverages will include soda, water and of course beer on tap.

For directions go to the SPUC website at www.spearfishingspuc.org for directions and any further updates.
