REEF ROWDIES  March 2009

How HIP can you GET!  Reef Rowdies have burst into the Video Age!  Our new category for competition is: VIDEO CLIP.  Three video clips per member, each with a maximum of 2 (two) minutes in length, may be submitted starting in our 2009 competition year.  At least 80% must be shot underwater.  The video will be judged on: (1) Content: is the message engaging; (2) Creativity: is it an innovative idea; (3) Execution: is the use of technology effective and (4) Effect: was the overall effect achieved.  Now – DIVE, DIVE, DIVE!! LIGHTS, CAMERA . . . . ACTION!

So, I did use the video on our club’s manatee dive in January but it was no where near 2 minutes.  Maybe I can stitch two clips together to get a few seconds – oh my . . .  what equipment will I need to do that????  What are you guy’s out there doing?  Maybe we need a dive just to shoot video – whatcha think?

We have been having some great slideshows at our meetings. I (Sonia) took you to Scotland in January and Ireland in March. Yes I did kiss the Blarney Stone!  Loved adding music to my show!!  If anyone would like to see the shows at your meeting, give me a call.

In February Bobbie Jo brought us to Bhutan. Did you ever wonder, "Where in the world is Bhutan?"  It is a tiny Himalayan Country tucked between Tibet and India.   Tourist entry into this magical place is very limited and Bobbie Jo was fortunate enough this past April to join a photography tour for a group of professional photographers.  She says it was one of the best trips she has ever done; certainly the most unique.  She said the Bhutanese are some of the most friendly, gentle people she has had the pleasure of spending time with and photographing.  They pride themselves on their Nationality and measure their success not in Gross National Product but in Gross National Happiness!

NEXT PROGRAMS: APRIL 7th (the 1st Tues) brings Bobbie Jo to show her slides of the Maldives. Fantastic diving, marvelous fish, whale sharks, manta rays and many more!  Join us 7:30 PM at Dixie Hollins High School – plenty of parking and held in the large ROTC room.  MAY 5th: will be Lynn Willis’ trip to the Philippians’.

BTS (Beneath The Sea), the largest dive and travel show in the USA, opens March 27, 28 & 29th in Secaucus, NJ. Our winning FLORIDA OCEAN PAL’S posters will be on display all week end and the national awards will be given out on Sunday 3/29.  Did some of you slip over to Ft. Lauderdale’s Ocean Fest May 2008?  Unfortunately there will be NO Ocean Fest this May. Keep in touch for the 2009-2010 new Ocean Pals contest theme to start after school starts.  If you have some schools interested in this worth-while contest have them email me so they can receive the guideline/rules personally. If you know of a student who is interested and their teacher hasn’t promoted the contest they can make their poster at home with their parent signing for them.  For more information – go to: www.BeneathTheSea.Org/opals.  This is FSDA’s outreach to students to become aware of and share their concerns for the marine environment through poster art.

NEXT TRIP: contact Lynn Willis -727-560-5450 – for the Blackbeard trip to the Bahamas 7/04/09.
Our condolences go to Lynn on the death of her mother.
