  ROWDIES

IN MEMORY OF
EILEEN MILLER
DIED MARCH 03, 2006

It is with great sadness that the Suncoast Reef Rowdies say goodby to our club member, fellow scuba diver and close friend, Eileen Miller. She has been well known in the diving community from the time she was first certified by Lou LeVine at Tackle Shack in 1976 until the present time.

1976 was the start of many great adventures for Eileen She and her good friend, Marianne Reisen joined the Suncoast Reef Rowdies that year. And adventures she did have! There were Bahamas trips on the Isla Mia with dive buddy Pat Fredette, (Pat joined the Rowdies a few years later.) Gulf dives on the Main Squeeze were special with Mike Yagman and many other good friends. She dove in Bimini, the Cayman Islands, Bonaire, Roatan, and Cozumel, enjoying fish and finding shells.

Some of you may know that Eileen was a synchronized swimmer in her youth. Her youthful enthusiasm continued whether she was swimming with the manatee at Crystal River or the sharks on Walker's Cay's famous shark feeding (they did two dives!) When Pat Fredette and Sonia Smith decided to take cavern diving lessons, Eileen was game for that too!

When they weren't diving you could find Eileen on a river clean up floating down the Rainbow River with the Rowdies and ending the day with a "Green Picnic". Yes that meant green food - we did have fun. There were many canoe/kayak trips too, some with her grandson at the paddle. The yearly trip to Ginnie Springs usually included an antique shopping adventure before we went home. You could depend on Eileen to help with the Rowdie registration/sign in for the WCC tournaments. The loads of fish brought in by her fellow Spearfishing divers was a sight worth seeing for Eileen as well as the great free divers outlasting all of us at their tournaments. She enjoyed it all.

And could she dance! Many WCC/FSDA banquets found Eileen there having a ball with her diving friends. Don't forget that as club hospitality chairman, she made sure the Rowdies had their "Holiday/Awards Party" at a great restaurant. She was also the one who delivered several collections of needed items to whatever organization the club chose for our holiday charity drive.

Thirty years has gone fast for a great lady who chose scuba diving to be one of her interests in life! We will miss you, Eileen.

he SPUC superbowl party once again lived up to its reputation. Lots of good food, good times and lots of fun. Everyone had a great time watching the game on the big screen and checking to see if they had won on the gambling boards. We also added something new this year to the party. We had a swap meet that included dive gear and electronics. It was such a success that it will be coming back next year. Thanks to all the volunteers that made the party happen.

I'd like to mention that the 2006 St.Pete Open will be held on August 19,20, and 21st at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort at 6800 Sunshine Skyway Lane, St.Petersburg. For more info go to www.holiday-inn.com/marinacove.ss

Last years St.Pete Open tended to be much more accommodating to our tournament. This year we will have extra rooms at a special rate. To get there by water, simply come in from the gulf via Egmont channel, Bunces pass, or north (Tierra Verde) channel. Turn north on the Skyway channel (The channel that runs alongside the bridge), and turn east under the Dick Misner bridge. Immediately after you've gone under the Dick Misner bridge, turn due north again and run till you see the Sunspree beach on your port side, and the entry channel ( Stay to the left side, due to the sandbar) to the Sunspree harbor dead ahead. Charts with waypoints will be handed out at the captains meeting.
