ROWDIES

New members now number four! The Rowdies wish to welcome Karen Frelier and Mark Schafer, who have been attending functions with the Rowdies for the past few months and now Sharon Thompson and Mike Caputi join us. Welcome all!! We are also glad that Pat Fredette is back on the active list after a lengthy time out.

Captain Mark Schafer has initiated a great Gulf Diving Invitational E-Mail for our interested divers. On Wednesday he and his boating friend, Carl, take a look at the weather and make a “guestimation” on whether or not it is a good weekend to try and make it out. Mark then e-mails everyone on the list of people interested in diving and asks who is available. Based upon the weather, it may be a Saturday or a Sunday. The divers interested e-mail or call him to let him know if they are available and on Friday, Mark will call them to let them know what day they are going out, setting up the time and place to meet. I hope there is a lot of interest in joining Mark. We need to be ready to slip out when the weather breaks between the tropical storms! There is a lot of good diving out in the Gulf, what a great opportunity! Thanks, Mark!

Lynn Willis is ever busy with on-going trips: Contact her: coolchicdiver@yahoo.com
DOMINICA, This Island has it all, short hikes to water falls, whale watching year round, canoeing, birding and kayaking. July 28-Aug 4, 2007. 12 people are now signed up and there is room for more.
GREECE and the Greek isles: An 11 day trip: Nov 2-12
EGYPT trip: We are doing the 8-day trip with a 3 nite Nile cruise and adding on the Petra 4 day to Jordan - departing March 5, 2008.

Lynn’s May trip to Boynton Beach was quite a success. WOW, top to bottom visibility, warm water in the 80’s, and great hotel services. “IF only I had my camera! Can you imagine 12 – repeat “12” - smooth trunk fish at one cleaning station! How unusual!” I had to go look that one up as I had forgotten what the smooth trunk fish looked like. They saw loggerhead and green turtles also but she felt there were fewer fish this year. I’m anxiously waiting to see Ed Z’s pictures!

Mike Caputi is looking into diving in the Panhandle on the Oriskany aircraft carrier. Give me a call if you are interested and we get some plans finalized.

Our April Rainbow River float/ clean-up has been postponed – yes, we wimped out. Burrrrr – too cold “for the kids.”  If you want an easy trip to bring the kids on, call me and I’ll put your name on the list.

DON’T FORGET THE SOD!!! Registration will have been over by the time this goes out but we hope to have winners of those great prizes!

1st and 3rd Tuesday meetings at 7 P.M.

Tournament Time!!
Well, it’s spring and the tournament season is well underway! The Spucs have been very active this year with 4 tournaments already wrapped up through the end of May. The SPUCS shot out of the gate with the 1st Annual TBSC Winter Invitational. 5 out of 7 big fish trophies plus 6 of the top 10 places including Ritchie Zacker’s 1st place win! The FSDA Freedive Tournament was next with GR Tarr placing 6th overall and Team Red Tide taking 4th place overall. WCC #1 was held in May with GR Tarr taking the #2 overall place and Rich Taylor grabbing the trophy for largest Cobia. The SPUCs took 2nd place overall and 4 of the top 10 places. Ritchie Zacker took the 7th place freediver position at the 2007 Spearboard Open.

So far, the defending WCC champions are off to a great start in the WCC series with 3 tournaments to go. TBSC is hosting in July at the Seminole boat ramp and the SPUCS are hosting in September at Ft. Desoto.

Speaking of tournaments, two of the best are still right around the corner. The 2007 FSDA Southern Open and the 2007 St. Pete Open.

The 2007 St. Pete Open is in it’s 43rd year and is being held at the Holiday Inn Sunspree on August 17-19. We are getting ready to kick off our sponsorship drive and still have some placements on the sponsor shirt available for new sponsors. We have already updated our new website with all of the info at www.stpeteopen.com.

John Schmidt is the reigning 2006 St. Pete Open World Champion, who will be this year’s champion? We’ll see in August at the St. Pete Open!
