REEF ROWDIES December 2008
The Rowdies all want
to “Wish You A Merry Christmas!” Time has gone so fast and it doesn’t
seem that we have seen many of our FSDA friends this year. (Too much
traveling!) We had fun hunting fossils and diving with some of the Bunnies
though. I do miss our FSDA’s December holiday party though December is soooo
busy and I hope March will have a good turn out as usual.
Wine Cellar was the
festive scene of action for the Rowdies again this year – what a lovely
place for an Awards ceremony – and good food too! This was Rowdies 35th
anniversary as a family scuba club (established in 1973). Pat Fredette is
our only remaining founding member with Ken & Sonia and Ed Zuranski joining
in ’86 & ’88.
All year long we had
been collecting for our big yearly drawing and with one last chance we all
donated our dollars – half to Lynn Willis the December winner. So then the
excitement built up for the EOY drawing and the big winner was . . . . . Pat
Fredette!! What good luck!!
You should have seen
Lynn Willis’s face as we managed to really surprise her by honoring
her for her service to the Rowdies with our huge traveling trophy, the
“Bunny Lauser Award.” Congratulations Lynn and thanks again for your
service!! This award was established in 1982 in memory of a very active
former club member, Bunny Lauser, who passed away. This trophy is passed on
to active members each year and now has 26 name plates attached. Thanks
again for your continued service Ed Z and Bobbie Jo R, our 2006 & 2007
winners!
Selecting competition
trophy awards is difficult but Ed and Mary Z did a fantastic job! Luckily
St. Pete has some excellent shops with a marine theme and they are great
shoppers! We also were presented certificates with a new background this
year – thanks Pat F, nice work!
We waited to see who won
the Rowdies’ 2008 competition with “baited breath” (where in the world did
that one come from?) We are mostly photographers adding Shelling, Fossiling,
Manmade Artifact and “Saving Our Seas”. It is hard to separate those last
two categories. I really had a difficult time finding shells this year –
did any of you find that problem? Pat Fredette’s Mammoth Tooth find gave
her points for her 6th place award. Lynn Willis’s great photos
placed her in the 5th slot. 4th place went to Ed Z
with both pictures in several categories and his fossil whale tooth. Third
place went to Lori Smith. Lori had not only pictures in several categories
but she found fossils, shells (more than I had seen!), and she had lugged a
large anchor up from the bottom of the Gulf for the Manmade Artifact.
Bobbie Jo captured 2nd place by only entering several photography
categories but what photographs!! Well, the secret to taking the top place
is to enter every category possible, even if it isn’t a “great” find, you
may take points for 2nd or 3rd for entering something!
First place went to me, Sonia Smith, so I send out the challenge to all club
members to pick up that sinker, fishing line, shell, and fossil and take
zillions of pictures. You can beat me next year!
