Reef Rowdies What a great way to celebrate the New Year – opening packages of great posters! It never fails to amaze me how talented Florida students are! Yes, it is that time again and Rowdies will be judging the Florida Ocean Pals Poster Contest for 2007-08. This year’s theme is “Overfishing”. As in the past, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each division: K – 2, 3 – 5, 6 – 9 and 10 – 12 grades will be sent to New York to compete with the winners from there and across the nation to California with savings bonds and a trip to the Cayman Isles as the main prizes. Ken has to decipher the student’s names attached to the back of each poster to enter in the database - the kids are good at art but what a mess their writing is! Are you any good at reading hieroglyphics? In looking back at the OLD YEAR – 2007, do you start at the bottom or the top? Short memories can easily recall December and the fun at Lynn Willis’s Christmas party to watch the boat parade at Madeira Beach. Lynn has a perfect back patio for the festivities. We all gorged on deserts to-die-for. Thanks Lynn. On that same note, I would have loved to see our friend Mike Yagman’s Main Squeeze all decked out and winning in TWO boat parades! Great going Mike & Friends – the old gal still has it. The Wine Cellar was at its usual great ambiance for the Rowdies Holiday and Awards Celebration. MMMMmmm – good food, and how about those “horses douvers.” We had quite a gathering of great scuba friends. It really was fun having our newest members and friends all decked out and then stealing gifts! (You know – That “Oriental’ Gift Exchange? I don’t suppose it is politically correct to say “Chinese.”) And great gifts were brought too. Rowdies aren’t all focused on themselves either – our charity giving went to CASA. If you have been down the Intercoastal, you may have met “Beggar” the dolphin – well, he posed with a big smile (probably hoping he would get a fishy reward) and his picture won the “Best of Show” in the Rowdies annual photo contest that night. I was fortunate enough to be the one behind the camera. Thanks, Beggar! Somehow things work out now and then and since I was charged with the selecting/buying of the awards I could rig it just right – A newer fish identification book was needed by the 1st place winner (me), the second place winner was with me and she saw a cute little “nemo” that just fit a spot in her home (Bobbie Jo). Now, I was there when the 3rd place winner (Lori) lost her dive flag float so – perfect award! I got lucky with the 4th place (Sharon) tie winner as she had just bought a new mask to put that strap on – Ed has to wait until the next meeting as he wasn’t able to be there. I DID NOT rig the winner of the big years end drawing – Ken Smith – that was on the “up & up.” A great big WELCOME to our newest members as our club expands – actually 8 divers have joined Rowdies this year: Mike Caputi, Sharon Thompson, Mark Schaefer, Karen Frelier, Lynn Willis, Jean Wilson, Jim Barnard & Diane Landers. Great divers going on great dive trips – this year we went to Dominica, Pompano, Boynton Beach, the Keys . . . Keep watching for the trip suggestions from Lynn Willis. You name it, she has a trip going there! Call her: 727-560-5450. We work in other activities also, Rainbow River Float & Picnic, kayaking, fossil/shark teeth hunting, shell hunting, educational programs – join us!! We meet at the Dixie Hollins High School ROTC room, 4940 62nd Street N, St. Petersburg, FL, on the 1st Tuesday and at a restaurant on the 3rd Tuesday.
